A Golden Hour Family Session in the Hay Field
There’s something about a late-summer evening in an open field that just feels timeless. Warm light, tall grass, room for little ones to run, and nothing distracting from the people in front of the camera.
For this family session, we kept things simple and let the evening unfold naturally. Instead of focusing on perfectly posed photos, we incorporated lots of movement — walking through the field, holding hands, running, playing, cuddling, and letting their little girl explore.
And those in-between moments ended up being some of my favourites from the entire session.
Why I Love Field Locations for Family Photos
One of the biggest misconceptions about choosing a photo location is that it needs to be elaborate to create beautiful images. Sometimes, the simplest locations photograph the best.
An open field gives us plenty of space to move around and creates a soft, natural backdrop that keeps the focus on your family. It also works beautifully for young children because they aren’t expected to stand still and smile at the camera for an entire session.
They can run. They can play. They can be picked up by Dad, hold Mom’s hand, explore the grass and just be themselves.
That movement is what creates photographs that actually feel like your family.
The Magic of Golden Hour
We photographed this session in the evening as the sun was getting lower in the sky, giving us that warm golden light throughout the gallery.
Golden hour is one of my favourite times to photograph outdoor family sessions because of the softness and warmth it adds to the images. Backlighting also creates that beautiful glow around hair and gives the photographs the dreamy, nostalgic feeling you see throughout this session.
If you’re booking an outdoor session with me, I’ll help recommend a start time based on the location, season and sunset so we can make the most of the light.
You Don’t Need Perfectly Posed Photos
Of course, I always make sure we capture a few photographs where everyone is looking toward the camera, but my favourite images are usually the ones that happen in between.
Your child running toward the camera.
Dad making them laugh.
Mom carrying them through the field.
Little hands reaching for yours.
The way your family interacts when you’re not thinking about having your photo taken. Those are the moments I want your gallery to be full of, because years from now, they’re often the photographs that mean the most.
What to Wear for a Summer Field Session
Their neutral wardrobe worked so beautifully against the greens and warm golden tones of the field. Coordinating doesn’t mean everyone has to match — choosing colours and textures that complement one another creates a much more natural look.
For an outdoor summer family session, I love neutrals, creams, soft earthy tones and subtle patterns. Most importantly, choose clothing you can comfortably move in. If we’re photographing a family with young children, chances are there will be walking, sitting, carrying, playing and plenty of movement.
Family Photography in Alliston & Simcoe County
You don’t need a milestone or special occasion to document your family.
Kids change incredibly quickly, and sometimes the ordinary season you’re living in right now is exactly what you’ll want to remember later.
If you’ve been thinking about updating your family photos, I’d love to create a session that feels relaxed, playful and true to your family.
Steiner & Co. Photography is based in Alliston, Ontario and photographs families throughout Alliston, Simcoe County and surrounding areas.
